Home to City Hall and multiple federal, state, and city office buildings – as well as Davies Symphony Hall, the San Francisco Opera and Ballet, and an assortment of museums – Van Ness / Civic Center is the hub of government, the arts, and culture in San Francisco. The Civic Center neighborhood is also an architectural smorgasbord, with the centerpiece being City Hall, which occupies two city blocks and is a beautiful example of the Beaux Arts style. Other notable buildings in the neighborhood include the public library, the Asian Art Museum, the Herbst Theatre, and Davies Hall.
Just a short walk away from South of Market (SoMa), Downtown San Francisco, and Hayes Valley, the Civic Center is well located for work and recreation. Surrounded by excellent public transportation, commuters have no need for an automobile and can walk downtown or to nearby government offices. For longer trips, residents can take BART or the MUNI to other San Francisco and Bay Area locations. When the workday is finished, there is still plenty to do. Eateries and clubs are plentiful in the Civic Center area and nearby Downtown San Francisco, SOMA, and Hayes Valley; and, with the theater and performing arts district in the area, entertainment of all sorts is readily available.
Although the neighborhood surrounding the Civic Center is largely commercial (or governmental), there are a surprising number of homes in the area. Detached single-family homes are a rarity, but condominiums and lofts are reasonably plentiful, from sleek contemporary condos in newer high-rises, to boutique condominium developments including 238 Olive and 368 Elm, and mixed-use loft and condo projects, such as 77 Van Ness.
From boutique condominiums to classic loft conversions, the Civic Center offers an interesting selection of residential real estate.
