Sea Ranch is a mix of part time residents, full time residents, and vacationers who come to enjoy all that the Sonoma Coast has to offer. The first housing unit in the Sea Ranch development was Condominium One, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been described as one of the most significant designs of the 1960s, exemplifying the Third Bay Tradition of architecture, also known as the Sea Ranch Style. Single-family homes in Sea Ranch are of similar design, drawing on local barns and farmhouses for inspiration and translating them into modern, wood-clad homes with clean vertical lines that blend in with the natural setting.
Real estate in Sea Ranch is pricey, with ocean front properties tending to be more expensive than homes on the hillsides and meadows. Sea Ranch has not yet been built out, and lots are still available, although new construction must comply with the Sea Ranch design specifications. Widely known for being a top vacation spot, The Sea Ranch is small, environmentally-planned community that lies along Highway 1 towards the northern end of Sonoma County’s coastline. The beachfront and rugged terrain all along The Sea Ranch coast provides locals with some pretty epic views, and there’s hardly a more picturesque place to go for a hike or have a picnic than at the 195-acre Gualala Point Regional Park, which lies just north of town. Shell Beach and the Shell Beach Access Trail also makes enjoying The Sea Ranch waterfront easy for anyone living in the area, and The Sea Ranch Chapel, which was originally designed by James Hubbell, is also a noteworthy landmark that’s located here as well.
Although there might not seem like much to The Sea Ranch overall, recent population stats have just over 1,300 people living here, but only around 300 of those 1,300 “residents” stay here year-round. With so many visitors coming and going, it’s estimated that nearly half of the homes in The Sea Ranch are used as vacation rentals, making it a great location to consider if you’re in the market for a second home or income property. The architecture seen throughout much of the area is unique and mainly consists of simple, low-roofline structures that all seem to have wooden siding or shingles on the exterior. Plenty of open lots/land is also available here if you’re hoping to build your dream home from the ground up, and there’s even a few small condo developments here too if something maintenance-free makes more sense for your individual needs or wants.
