The Sun Valley / Forbes / Fairhills neighborhoods encompass the area directly northwest of downtown San Rafael.
Real estate in Sun Valley is diverse in character, with architectural styles changing as the neighborhood developed. Subdivision began in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Most building, however, occurred after World War II with mid-century homes being constructed through the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
Mid-century modern homes are prevalent in Sun Valley East/Sun Valley West, Rafael Highlands, and Racquet Club Estates. Architecture that is more contemporary can be found in newer areas including Grove Hill and Shannon Lane.
Originally designated Neighborhood 13 in San Rafael's General Plan Map of Neighborhoods, Sun Valley is a robust community with lots to do. For casual get-togethers, the Sun Valley Park features a fully fenced playground, picnic facilities, and basketball and volleyball courts. The Sun Valley Racquet Club offers more social and recreational activities, including a fitness room, year round swimming, and tennis. The Racquet Club also hosts fun-filled family activities such as family bingo, dinners and holiday parties.
Sun Valley is in the San Rafael City Schools attendance area. Elementary school children attend Sun Valley School through 5th grade, and then move on to Davidson Middle School. High school students have the choice of attending either San Rafael High School or Terra Linda High.
