As San Rafael's northernmost neighborhood, Marinwood is a quiet suburban community of 1900 acres bordered by 800 acres of open space. Shopping and services are conveniently nearby and easy access to the freeway make commuting a breeze.
Development in Marinwood began in the late 1950s, which means that the mid-century modern design aesthetic is well represented and includes a tract of about 375 Eichler homes. These Lower Lucas Valley / Marinwood Eichlers vary in condition, but can represent a great value to the Eichler enthusiast interested in renovation. The area has a wonderful heritage of modern architecture in San Rafael.
Most homes in Marinwood are single-family properties, although there are some condominiums in the area, including new units that are being developed as part of the Marinwood Plaza project.
Marinwood is also referred to as Lower Lucas Valley. The community center offers year-round recreational programs for young and old alike, including ski trips, a swim team, foreign language instruction, travel opportunities, and summer camp for kids. Marinwood is in the highly regarded Dixie School District. Youngsters in the area attend either Mary Silveira Elementary or Dixie Elementary, while older children attend Miller Creek Middle School. All three are award winning San Rafael schools. Most high school students go to nearby Terra Linda High School, although a few elect to travel a bit farther afield and attend San Rafael High.
