As a suburb of San Francisco, single-family homes are what most think of when dreaming about buying a new home in San Rafael. Detached single-family options in town range from larger, newly-built residences with all the bells and whistles to smaller cottage and bungalow style homes that boast an incredible amount of charm and character. Luxury waterfront homes also occupy a fairly significant portion of the San Rafael real estate market thanks to the city's prime location along the San Francisco Bay. And with part of the east side of town also backing up to China Camp State Park, you're also never too far from plenty of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, regardless of where you live in the San Rafael area.
The city's tradition of architectural beauty extends into its residential neighborhoods, which offer a wide variety of new and classic homes. The prestigious Dominican Section is known for its spacious traditionally-designed houses, while homes and condos in the Peacock Gap's Golf and Country Club area are typically newer, and set on view properties overlooking San Pablo Bay. Buyers from San Francisco and out-of-state often choose San Rafael for its realistic entry level prices, at $600-$800k for a 3+ bedroom single-family home, as well as its excellent public school systems, and close proximity to the big city.
San Rafael is known for many things. It's a hotbed for entertainment and technology, but also a beautiful historic city, home to some of Northern California's finest classic architecture and a lot of modern designs. The city's thriving downtown is famous for its wide variety of shopping spots and restaurants in character buildings, particularly in the colorful Fourth Street neighborhood. San Rafael's combination of natural and man-made beauty has also helped make it a popular filming location, with iconic movies like American Graffiti, THX 1138, and Gattaca set here.
Postcards of San Rafael often show the city's beautiful Spanish mission buildings, including Saint Raphael Church, with its beautiful white and terra cotta bell tower back dropped by tree-covered hills, dating back to the settlement's earliest days in 1817. Other architecturally significant buildings in the San Rafael real estate area include the angular Marin County Civic Center, the only public building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Falkirk Cultural Center, a handsomely preserved Victorian mansion just a block from downtown.
Despite being just 40 minutes from San Francisco, parts of San Rafael still maintain a bit of a quiet country feel, especially around the outskirts of town. As mentioned above, the sprawling China Camp State Park sits over on San Rafael's east side of town, and several other parks and nature preserves also sit just outside of San Rafael as well. For anybody who loves to get out on the golf course, the Peacock Gap Golf Club is conveniently located in San Rafael, and Dominican University of California also calls this part of Marin County home too.
