Rutherford is a town that revolves around the wine industry; and the area is full of wineries, tasting rooms, and vineyards.  A warm summertime climate tempered by afternoon breezes and the unique soils found in the Rutherford sub-appellation lend a distinctive character to the grapes grown in the area.  Rutherford wineries, which range from small family owned businesses to the acclaimed Mumm-Napa and historic Inglenook wineries, are particularly well known for their Cabernets, Zinfandels, and sparkling wines.  Residents of Rutherford get the best of all worlds; they are surrounded by the beautiful vineyards of the Napa Valley and need only travel a few miles to St. Helena or Napa to find the goods and services necessary for daily life.

Most of the land in the Rutherford area is dedicated to vineyards and wineries with a few private homes scattered throughout the area.  The homes in Rutherford vary in style from small bungalows and ranches to contemporary residences.  Because of the numerous vineyards, many of the properties in Rutherford are on quiet lanes that offer rural appeal.

Rutherford Homes for Sale

Despite Rutherford being a pretty established community in Napa County, it’s still officially listed as a census-designated place that only has a population of around 164 residents. Located directly in between the unincorporated community of Zinfandel and the census-designated place of Oakville, Rutherford actually has quite a bit going on around its unofficial town center, which sits at the intersection of Rutherford Road and St. Helena Highway. Along with the La Luna Market & Taqueria, which has awesome burritos by the way, it’s here that you’ll also find a couple small restaurants, a few wineries, a post office, and even a small hotel for anyone out exploring wine country but prefer to stay a bit further outside all the hustle and bustle surrounding nearby Napa or other larger communities.

Rutherford Real Estate

With much of the Rutherford real estate market often clumped together with the entire Napa area, chances are you’ll find quite a few options when browsing what’s currently available. If you’re looking to live directly in the Rutherford community, you might find a few single-family homes scattered somewhere near the town center, although with so many vineyards and wineries situated nearby, much of the land outside of town is already occupied and rarely listed for sale. Although every now and then you might get lucky and see a vineyard on the open market, which depending on its size, could price anywhere from $2 to over $10 million.
