Occidental Real Estate

Occidental is a picturesque village in western Sonoma County.  Situated along the Bohemian Highway between Freestone and Monte Rio, Occidental was founded in 1876 as a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad, which connected Cazadero to the Sausalito ferry in Marin County.  Originally designed to transport products and lumber between Western Sonoma County and San Francisco, the railroad became popular with vacationers who wanted to escape the San Francisco fog and the heat of the inland valleys, making many Sonoma towns, including Camp Meeker, Guerneville, Duncan Mills, Monte Rio, and Occidental trendy holiday destinations in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Today, these same towns are still popular with tourists who come to enjoy the beautiful redwood forests, rolling pasturelands, and outdoor activities along the Russian River, as well as the wineries and Sonoma lifestyle that make this area famous.  Occidental is also home to a small population of permanent residents, many of whom are artists, musicians, and craftspeople.  Good restaurants, unique shops and galleries, and a variety of events including concerts presented by the Occidental Redwood Arts Council are all a part of the charm and allure of Occidental.

Many of the original homes in Occidental were summer cabins and the Victorian style homes that are found in Occidental's very small downtown area.  The hills surrounding Occidental are studded with ranches, vineyard properties, cabins that evoke memories of Occidental's hippie communes of the 1960s, and beautifully designed custom homes created by prominent architects.

Occidental is a small Wine Country town that lies directly in between Santa Rosa and the Sonoma County coastline. With a population of right around 1,115 people, Occidential offers potential home buyers undeniable small town charm, and also a two-block “Main Street” that actually has a lot going on for a community this small. A Bohemian market, several small restaurants and cafes, a couple wine bars, a yoga studio, and a number of quaint little boutiques make downtown Occidental a pretty fun place to eat, drink, and shop, and it’s also pretty walkable too if you’re somebody who is lucky enough to live right near the center of town.
