Oakville Real Estate

In the 1800s Oakville, California was not much more than an unpretentious water stop for the steam train that carried wealthy passengers between ferries docked in Vallejo and the spa town of Calistoga in northwest Napa County.  Today the town of Oakville, which is located on Highway 29 between St. Helena and Yountville, is still small, but it has become a world-class wine-producing region in the heart of the Napa Valley.

The town of Oakville is in the Oakville AVA, a distinct Napa wine district with, at last count, 24+ wineries and over 5000 acres of vineyards including the historic Far Niente Winery and the Robert Mondavi Winery.  Beautiful surroundings, a moderate climate, and proximity to all that is fun and exciting about the Napa Valley make Oakville a great place to live and play.  A popular venue in Oakville is the Robert Mondavi Winery, which, since the late 1960s, has hosted a series of casually sophisticated events and concerts throughout the year, including the annual Robert Mondavi Summer Festival.

Homes in Oakville are scattered in and around vineyards.  Most are single-family homes. Some are quaint turn-of-the-century bungalows and cottages; others are contemporary custom designed homes on large parcels or acreage.  Whatever the style, one thing that homes in Oakville share is a distinct wine country ambience.

Oakville Homes for Sale

The little old town of Oakville, California is officially listed as a census-designated place in Napa County, and believe it or not, only has a population of around 70 people. Rich with history, Oakville originally got its start all the way back in 1868 when it was just a quick water stop along the steam line railway between Napa and Calistoga. But being such a premium place to start and maintain a vineyard, Oakville soon sprouted into a small but distinguished community, which is how it is best described today. Even with such a limited population, the “downtown” part of Oakville, which is directly located at the intersection of Walnut Lane and the St. Helena Highway, still features a few small wine bars (of course), the Napa Wine Company, a post office, and even a small grocery store. Just outside of town is where you’ll find countless wineries and vineyards, and Napa is only about a 20 minute drive from Oakville, which has plenty of additional amenities for local home owners to use and enjoy as well.

Oakville Real Estate

With so much of the surrounding landscape occupied by commercial vineyards and wineries, the Oakville real estate market is even more limited than you may think for a community that only has about 70 residents. Every now and then you might actually see a vineyard listed on the Oakville real estate market, and there’s even a number of sprawling mansion-style homes scattered around the Oakville area too, which of course take full advantage of the area’s spectacular natural landscape in so many different ways. These and other lavish properties that are positioned around Oakville regularly reach $10 to $20 million, but look for more modest homes in the area to start somewhere between $700,000 and $800,000 and then go up from there.
