North Beach Real Estate, San Francisco

Often referred to as Little Italy, San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood is a vibrant community with a long and interesting history. Located just north of Nob Hill and downtown San Francisco – near Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf – North Beach is a popular tourist destination, but is equally favored by locals who appreciate its eclectic dining, lively nightlife, and diverse charm.

North Beach was once home to San Francisco’s Italian immigrant population. Today, although the original residents are long gone, it maintains much of its old world personality with a modern twist. In the 1950s, North Beach was the birthplace of the Beat Generation and home to many of the period’s famed personalities, including Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Neal Cassady. Nowadays, the iconic bookstore of that bohemian era, City Lights Bookstore, sits side-by-side with traditional ristorantes, trattorias, and delicatessens, as well as some of San Francisco’s hottest bars and nightclubs.

Although there are plenty of shops, eateries, and clubs in North Beach, it is primarily residential. Thoughtful urban planning that maintained the integrity of the neighborhood and a good balance of businesses and homes in North Beach led the American Planning Association, in 2007, to designate the community as one of its Top 10 Great Neighborhoods, reflecting its character, convenience, and affordability.
