Well known architects have been designing homes in Kentfield for over sixty years. During the late 1940's and early 50's, Jack Hillmer and Warren Callister were very active in Marin County. In Kentfield you can find the easily distinguishable jutting rooflines and horizontal wood panels of their structures nestled among giant oak trees. Recently a Daniel Lieberman home located in the Kentfield hills was on the market. This interesting design features a central pole with a sprawling umbrella style roof extending from the top of the pole. Lieberman's homes tend to be on the small side, but with all those windows who cares?
Henry Hill is also well represented in Kentfield. From the outside Hill's houses look somewhat boxy, are usually flat-roofed with extended eaves, and have a wall of windows looking out over a beautiful view. His use of wood and stone give the homes a feeling of being integrated with the surroundings and create the perfect place for sipping that morning latte.
The Bay Area firm of Swatt Architects designed a 5000 square foot, U-shaped house in Kentfield. This innovative design organizes the living space around what Swatt describes as a "two story circulation spine" that connects the living spaces. Above this spine is a linear skylight that floods the area with natural light and gives the space an open feeling. Another contemporary firm whose design can be found in Kentfield is the Berkley based company of Sheahan and Quandt Architects. They have recently completed a home in the area, and are known for their sleek design and eco-friendly philosophy.
