A broad range of price points creates an interesting real estate market in Hayward. The availability of affordable housing makes Hayward a popular house-hunting location for many first time homebuyers. For high-end buyers, there are exclusive homes in the Hayward Hills, which is one of the several Alameda County areas listed on Forbes 2009 list of the 500 most expensive zip codes in the United States. The 1940s were booming times in Hayward. As the economy grew, so did the population and the need for affordable housing. Many of the early tract homes built in Hayward were built by David Bohannon and Oliver Rousseau, who also built many mid-century homes in San Francisco’s Sunset District.
Residential development in Hayward has been strong in recent years, which means potential home buyers are often presented with plenty of newly built homes, condos, and townhouses. Homes nestled up in the Hayward Hills are often some of the most expensive properties you’ll find on the Hayward real estate market, which is more than understandable given some of the sprawling, unobstructed views of the bay front buyers will see from up there. The gated and prestigious Stonebrae Country Club is also where luxury home buyers will find a nice mix of high-end single-family homes on the market at any given time, while other more affordable homes and condos are usually scattered all throughout the city center and closer to Interstate 880.
Just east of the San Mateo Bridge, situated between San Leandro and Castro Valley to the north and northeast, and Union City to the south, is the East Bay city of Hayward California. As the sixth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hayward is a busy, centrally located municipality with easy access to the Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and other Bay Area communities.
As a typical Bay Area suburb, Hayward isn’t where potential buyers will find many well-known attractions. The Hayward Area Historical Society museum is located close to downtown, and there’s also a few small museums and art galleries situated in the area as well. But for the most part, Hayward is mainly dominated by sprawling residential development, which means outside of a fairly small downtown and several city-maintained parks that offer a few recreational amenities for locals to enjoy, you won't find lots of activity or hustle-and-bustle that often surrounds larger cities or high-profile attractions.
With over 3200 acres devoted to industrial and business parks, and access to transportation via rail and sea, Hayward is a center for manufacturing, as well as sales and distribution operations. Hayward is also home to the Hayward campus of California Sate University East Bay, which, in 2009, was rated by the Princeton Review as a “Best in the West” college for the sixth consecutive year.
