Guerneville is a small community on the Russian River, about 20 miles northwest of Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County. Named after the Swiss immigrant George Guerne, who owned the town's sawmill in the late 1800s, Guerneville began as a logging town. When the logging boom declined, well-to-do vacationers from San Francisco discovered Guerneville, and the area prospered as a popular tourist resort. During the 1960s, hard times fell on Guerneville and it became a haven for the disenfranchised. Today, Guerneville has reinvented itself, and it is once again a popular holiday destination with small town charm and hospitality.
