Greenbrae Homes & Real Estate

See the newest Greenbrae homes for sale and more real estate in Marin County below. Greenbrae is a tiny unincorporated community that's wedged in between Corte Madera and San Rafael, which of course are two of Marin County's largest cities in terms of population and area. Also located adjacent to Highway 101, living in Greenbrae is actually fairly convenient given the community's easy access to nearby amenities and attractions, not to mention Interstate 580, which acts as a direct route over to East Bay. One unique aspect about the Greenbrae community is that you won't find much of a traditional "downtown" here so-to-speak, but all along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, which acts as the area's primary thoroughfare, are a number of retail stores, banks, gas stations, restaurants, and even Marin General Hospital over near Sir Francis Drake and Bon Air Road. Greenbrae Real Estate Market

Real estate in Greenbrae runs the gamut from large elegant homes in wooded neighborhoods to smaller mid-century homes built in residential developments. It is possible to find a small modest home or condo for a reasonable price (by Marin standards), but there are upscale, stylish contemporary homes, many with fabulous views, available as well. Greenbrae has some beautifully wooded lots and gracious homesites, the result of a conscious effort to preserve the lovely oaks growing on the hillsides. There are a few homes on the level streets close to Sir Frances Drake Boulevard, however the majority of the homes are set in the hills, which affords some great views of Mount Tam or the bay.

Thanks to Greenbrae's hilly terrain and position just off the San Rafael Bay, homes for sale in the area are specifically noted for their awesome views of the water, making it a great place for anyone who values sprawling, unobstructed views of the bay front. Given Greenbrae's landscape is almost entirely residential, home buyers interested in living in this particular part of Marin County shouldn't have much trouble finding a number of attractive and desirable options that fit the needs and wants of most of today's suburbanites, but with that said, buyers should also expect to pay typical Marin County home prices when buying a Greenbrae home or condo, which tend to start over $1 million for a detached single-family residence and right around $600,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condominium.

Greenbrae Community Amenities

Developed on what was once an old dairy ranch, Greenbrae was named for the lush green hills — brae is Scottish for hill — that surround the area. As its name suggests, much of Greenbrae is hilly; beyond that, Greenbrae is a community that is difficult to define. This residential neighborhood borders Larkspur, Kentfield and San Rafael, but the boundaries are a bit unclear. Its zip code is served by the post office in San Rafael. The Greenbrae bike trail meanders into Kentfield, and the Greenbrae Boardwalk wanders into Larkspur. Perplexing? Perhaps. Even city planners have confessed to some confusion. In the long run, however, it doesn't really matter. Greenbrae is what it is — a lovely area surrounded by oak covered hillsides.

Greenbrae is centrally located, near all the necessary conveniences of modern life. Only 5 minutes from the San Rafael Bridge, making a handy commute for people working in the east bay, it is also just minutes away from the Larkspur ferry to San Francisco. The neighborhood shopping center, Bon Air, is a hub for central Marin shopping and has a full compliment of services including restaurants, apparel, gift and specialty shops, banking services, gas stations, and an excellent market. Marin General Hospital, the county's largest medical facility, is also located in Greenbrae.
