Named for a nearby quarry of easily worked sandstone, Freestone dates back to the 1870s when it was a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad which ran from Sausalito north through Occidental and Duncans Mills to its terminus in Cazadero. In its early years, Freestone was a town with a store, a blacksmith shop, two hotels, a livery stable, a saloon, and a few residences. Today, little has changed and it is easy to imagine the Freestone of 140 years ago.
The actual town of Freestone, which consists of a few homes and businesses, fronts the Bohemian Highway and is less than ½ mile from one end to the other. Homes range from traditional mid-century ranch style on the outskirts of town to small bungalows and cottages in town. In the outlying areas, homes are on acreage - offering privacy and, often, picturesque views.
Although it is off the beaten path, the commute from Freestone to Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, or other North Bay locations is straightforward, making Freestone a great choice for the city worker looking for a country home. Since Freestone shares a zip code with Sebastopol, homes for sale in Freestone are sometimes included with Sebastopol properties, so be sure to take a look at both when looking for real estate in the Freestone area.

With an official population of under 50 people, there isn’t much to the small, unincorpoated community of Freestone, but that doesn’t mean homes here shouldn’t be considered a desirable option for anybody looking for a quiet place to live. Situated amongst the rolling hills of western Sonoma County, Freestone lies almost directly in between the oceanside city of Bodega Bay and the county seat of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa, California. At the edge of town sits the Wild Flour Bread shop, which over the years has evolved into one of the most storied bake shops in the entire Bay Area, not to mention a place that has some of the tastiest baked goods around. On the other side of town is where you’ll find a small general store, a couple more small shops, and even a bed and breakfast; but outside of that, this quaint country town is pretty low-key for the most part, and that’s generally how most people who already live here prefer it stays.
With Freestone being so close to other Sonoma County cities and towns like Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park, homes for sale in the area are a great option for home buyers wanting a quiet country home that’s still just minutes from plenty of urban amenities. Look for most houses in Freestone to be relatively quaint and cozy, which certainly keeps home prices in the area manageable. Occasionally you might see a ranch or equestrian property on the market, or maybe even a newly built home with a swimming pool and all the bells and whistles, which in most instances will jump up unto the $1.5 to $2 million range. But for the smaller cottage-style farmhouses in Freestone, expect to spend anywhere from the mid $500,000s on up to just under $800,000.
