Read MoreOnce home to brothels, gambling establishments, and criminal activities of all sorts, San Francisco’s Barbary Coast – now known as the Financial District – has its roots back in the Gold Rush era when fortune hunters and entrepreneurs, speculators and opportunists turned the desolate spot by the bay into a boomtown. Nowadays the old Barbary Coast has exchanged its rough-and-tumble inclinations for the buttoned-down manners of financial institutions, law firms, and corporate headquarters in San Francisco’s Financial District.
Located between the Embarcadero along the San Francisco Bay and Downtown San Francisco, the Financial District is the business center of the city. Montgomery Street, sometimes referred to as the Wall Street of the West, runs through the center of the district and is surrounded by the skyscrapers that give San Francisco it’s signature skyline. The Financial District isn’t, however, all business. Shopping centers, including the complex at the Ferry Building and Embarcadero Center, hotels, cafes, and restaurants serve the needs of residents, visitors, and workers in the area.
Although detached single-family homes just don’t exist in the Financial District, there is a surprising array of townhomes, condominiums, and loft style homes that are perfectly located for the banker, broker, or downtown businessperson who isn’t interested in commuting and enjoys being in the center of the action. Some are located in historic renovated buildings, such as The Jackson at 845 Montgomery and The Landmark at 333 Grant Avenue. Others, including the large Golden Gateway Commons complex, are larger and of newer construction.
