El Cerrito is a Contra Costa County community that really started to grow during the post-war building boom back in the 1950's, and housing styles throughout the area certainly reflect that. But even despite wider spread growth around the middle of the century, many original homes for sale in El Cerrito date back to the 1920's, 30's, and 40's, which is also why you'll find a pretty broad selection of charming bungalows and cottages on the local real estate market as well. True to small town form, locals living in El Cerrito enjoy a bi-weekly farmers market, plenty of annual events, and just an overall friendly atmosphere, which is hard to overlook if you're still on the fence about which Contra Costa County city or town has the most to offer. Older farmhouses and charming cottages and bungalows usually start somewhere around the mid-600's in El Cerrito, but larger homes with four or more bedrooms, as well as most of the newer construction in the area, stretches up into the million dollar range in most instances, which is quite common for this particular part of the East Bay.
Even though over 23,000 people now call El Cerrito home, some might say it's still a place in Contra Costa County that most resembles a classic small town. Sure, on the outskirts of town lie plenty of shopping centers and big box retailers that most larger suburban communities have nowadays, but downtown El Cerrito is still very walkable and features countless small shops, restaurants, cafes, and even the historic Cerrito Theatre, which now acts as a fully-restored two-screen movie theater that also offers a great selection of beer, wine, and a full dining menu in addition to showing top motion pictures. In addition, El Cerrito also provides easy and quick access to Interstate 580, which is especially convenient for anyone who frequently commutes over to Marin County or further south into the East Bay.
