Contra Costa County Real Estate Market

As a top suburban destination for Bay Area home buyers, homes for sale in the Contra Costa County housing market can actually be relatively affordable compared to a number of other locations in the region, especially San Francisco and nearby Marin County. And when buyers also consider all the major highways that weave their way throughout Costa Contra County, it sometimes feels as it there is an added layer of convenience to living somewhere in the area. And that’s definitely the case if a homebuyer happens to be someone who commutes into Alameda County or San Francisco, which at most is only about an hour-and-a-half drive from Contra Costa County’s far east side.

Northwest Contra Costa has a history of being an industrial area. Long thought of as tough working towns, many neighborhoods of the cities in this area are becoming gentrified, including areas of Richmond, Pinole, San Pablo, and Martinez. Even so, housing here still tends to be affordable. Development in the waterfront area of Hercules is of particular note for its pedestrian friendly, mixed use New Urbanism design; and El Cerrito is a popular choice for homebuyers looking for a house in the hills with a great view and relatively affordable price.

Contra Costa County Community Amenities

With Mount Diablo State Park right smack dab in the middle of Contra Costa County, outdoor recreation is easily accessible from just about anywhere in this particular part of East Bay. In fact, the Diablo area as a whole has twenty-nine individual parks and park preserves, totaling more than 89,000 acres. In addition, Contra Costa County also has quite the network of hiking trails and biking paths for residents and home owners to enjoy, most notably the Iron Horse Regional Trail, the Contra Costa Canal Regional Trail, and part of the American Discovery Trail, which stretches over 6,800 miles from coast to coast.

For buyers who are thinking about making a move to Contra Costa County and still hope to enjoy some sense of a small, tight-knit community, the cities of Clayton, Moraga, Orinda, and Pinole all have a population between 10,000 and 20,000. This generally feels small enough to maintain a little charm and character, but also large enough to provide residents with big box shopping and other convenient amenities often associated with larger suburban communities. The county seat of Martinez only has a population of around 37,000 people, while the cities of Antioch, Concord, and Richmond are the three largest in Contra Costa County and have populations of 105,009, 125,205, and 106,357 respectively.
