Bodega Real Estate

Bodega, CA is a small Sonoma County town located on the Bodega Highway between Sebastopol and Bodega Bay, slightly north of the Marin County line.  Originally surrounded by redwood forests, the town of Bodega was established in the mid-1800s and was the site of the first lumber mill to be built on the west coast.  Today, Bodega's forests are gone, but the heart of the town still maintains the quaint New England atmosphere established by its founders.

Bodega might have become the town that time forgot if it had not been for Alfred Hitchcock.  Today, visitors stop by Bodega to see some of the landmarks made famous by Hitchcock's movie "The Birds", including the 150 year old Potter School, which has since undergone several incarnations as a restaurant, museum/gift shop, and private home.  The Saint Teresa of Avila Church, also seen in the movie, sits next to the schoolhouse and is the oldest continuously operating church in Sonoma County.

The village of Bodega is charmingly compact, with little more than Potter School, St. Teresa's church, a general store, a few small shops (including an Artisans' Co-op and gallery), and the post office creating the town center.  Although there are a few "classically Bodega" homes in town, many of the homes with a Bodega address are farmhouses, ranches, or ranchettes sitting on larger lots or parcels in the surrounding countryside.

Bodega Homes for Sale

Bodega, California is officially listed as an unincorporated community and census designated place in Sonoma County, but it’s quaint downtown that features a small market, a firehouse, a coffee shop, several art galleries and dress shops, and even a surf shop help make it a fun an unique place to live even despite its lack of legal status. The community’s location immediately north of State Route 1 at Bodega Highway also puts locals just a short 10 minute drive to Bodega Bay and the rest of the stunning Northern California coastline, making it a great place to live for anyone who loves to get out on the water or enjoy an afternoon at one of the many nearby outdoor recreational amenities, including Doran Regional Park, The Links at Bodega Harbor Golf Course, the Bodega Dunes Campground, or even the Sonoma Coast State Park, while lies a bit further up Highway 1 and about 3 miles north of Carmet.

Bodega CA Real Estate

Homes for sale in the Bodega area can be surprisingly expensive, mainly because many happen to include lots of open space or still act as active, working ranches that are great for horseback riding, vine growth, or countless other uses that require a sprawling countryside landscape. Because of the area’s hilly terrain, most houses or ranch estates in Bodega also offer spectacular, panoramic views of the many vineyards that dot most of Sonoma County, and depending on how high up you are, you might even get a glimpse of the ocean from your new home as well, but only on the clearest of clear days. With most homes for sale in Bodega also including plenty of private acreage along with a fabulous living space, look for home prices to start close to $3 million in many instances, unless you’re able to spot a small farmhouse on the market that's closer to town, which still usually command close to $1 million.
