Wildfire Prevention & Preparedness

As we all know the 2013 fire season in Northern California has been much more active and worse than anyone had imagined.  The result of a very dry 2013 winter and a mountain snowpack of only 17% of normal, we all need to do our part to keep our neighborhoods, our properties and our families safe from wildfires.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) statistics state that 94% of CA wildfires are started by people, therefore it is very important that each of us take all steps to reduce wildfire risks. CAL FIRE has implemented a program called, "Ready, Set, Go," that all of us should be familiar with.  For more information on this program, please go to

The California Wildland Coordinating Group (CWCG) also has very pertinent wildfire prevention information on their site,

The non-profit organization, FIRESafe Marin, is dedicated to preventing wildland fire hazards and to promote fire safety awareness in Marin County.  See for a wide range of preventative measures from a fire-preparedness calendar to a firewise plant list for your yard and more.

Marin County has an emergency phone notification system in place that will alert residents via land lines (listed and unlisted numbers) in the event of any incident specific event to the specific geographic areas affected.  Cell phones and VoIP (voice over internet protocol) phones will need to be registered if you wish to receive emergency information via text, call or email.  Information to register can be found at

Let's all reduce risks and be prepared.  Information is power, so I encourage all to review and implement the information on the websites above.
