625 San Anselmo Ave. More on Exciting New Restaurant Plans!

Last month, we wrote about the old Royal Sweet Bakery building at 625 San Anselmo Avenue in Downtown San Anselmo. The new owners, Josh and Ashley Petersen,  have exciting plans to remodel the space and develop a concept restaurant featuring rooftop terrace dining and an interior courtyard. Josh and Ashley hosted an open house at the location on February 12 to answer residents' questions, just prior to the Planning Commission meeting where...

The new owners of the old Royal Sweet Bakery building at 625 San Anselmo Avenue have exciting plans for a concept restaurant that proposes rooftop dining in Downtown San Anselmo. Josh and Ashley Petersen will host an open house at the location on Monday, February 12, at 6pm. They will be on hand to discuss and explain their plans for an hour, just before the Planning Commission meeting, where their application is scheduled to be discussed. Please come by to meet them and ask questions. Then plan to attend the Commission meeting to support their proposal, which would add an unique, enjoyable...

Goings on in Downtown San Anselmo. Cucina to re-open under "old management". True North currently closed.

Apparently, the former owner of Cucina has taken the space back over, is remodeling, and intends to open for business sometime in December. On a recent walk, I saw the following two notices in the window, indicating San Anselmo may soon regain one of its longstanding, popular, and much-loved restaurants. A lot of folks I've spoken with are looking forward to the opening. I'll be there too!

Since we announced that Cucina would close and be replaced by an artisan pizza restaurant, we have been keeping an eye on the space and noticing the steady progress.  On my daily walk late last week, I found the door to the former Cucina open, with a fire blazing in the brick pizza oven. The new Bridge Place Pizza was open for a trial run, with...

San Anselmo Downtown Welcomes Amphora Nueva!

 amphora_nueva_san_anselmo._claire_bradley_419

My daily walks usually take me through Downtown San Anselmo at some point along the way. And for a while now, there have been obvious signs of construction at 429 San Anselmo Ave., just next door to Ludwigs Fine Wine and Spirits. But with the windows covered, it has been difficult to divine what was being brought to life---- until about a week ago.  The door was open; there were shelves, containers, counters, and workmen putting on finishing touches under the direction of a young woman, Claire Bradley, who is one of the owners. (That's Claire in the picture, taking a short break to talk with me about her new store, Amphora Nueva). Amphora Nueva is the third Bay Area location for the Bradley family's...

San Anselmo Restaurant (R)Evolution! (cont'd)

 picture_of_bubbas_diner_412

In our most recent post, we reported on the transformation of Lo Coco's  Pizza into True North Pub and Grill, and the evolving vision of the new owner, Buck Minitch in his quest to carve out a niche for himself and provide exciting, interesting, and affordable food options in San Anselmo. Buck has plans for several more restaurants as he aims to attract more diners and shoppers to the heart of town and help to promote and preserve the vitality of the business district.

I spoke with Buck recently at his current project, the former Bubbas Diner, which will reopen in the next week or so as Crossroads Barbeque and Deli, a takeout food venue featuring, of course, barbeque, plus sandwiches, snacks, drinks, fruit, juices, and more. Current plans call for split hours, perhaps...

San Anselmo Restaurant (R)Evolution!

I used to love LoCoco's Pizza in downtown San Anselmo, went there for years, and enjoyed talking to Mr. LoCoco on every visit. I ate breakfast at Bubba's and celebrated special occasions at Cucina. But nothing lasts forever and the only thing that is guaranteed is change. LoCoco's was sold several years ago, and the new owners struggled. Even though the food was  excellent, they couldn't make a go of it. Enter Buck Minitch, a young man with a lot of energy, a passion for the restaurant business, a commitment to San Anselmo, and an attitude of flexibility. Buck tried a number of different formats, menus,  and business models, keeping what worked and changing what didn't. Gradually, folks started coming back to the restaurant, which now operates as...
