Peacocks, Pigs & Paint: Getting Rid of Old Paint in Marin County
Getting rid of those old paint cans is really a piece of cake...It's MUCH easier than you think. Plus, you get to see peacocks and pigs at the same time!
As a Realtor, at the end of just about every single property deal I do, there's always the routine list of things that need to be done, such as remind clients to change their addresses, remind them to turn on the utilities, and figure out who is taking away all of the old cans of paint from the property that just changed hands. Usually sellers will leave partial cans of paint with current colors as a courtesy to the buyers. But what if there's decades-worth of old paint cans stashed? I recently closed escrow on a little condo listing that was just over 1000 square feet, and in the storage unit, there were almost 20 cans of paint, in a variety of colors. The seller was out-of-the area, so the responsibility of getting rid of all of this paint came to me....what to do? Of course, you can hire somebody to come haul it away. But why pay when you can take it yourself for free? I was excited to find out that all I had to do was to take it up to the Marin Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Facility in San Rafael. They will take up to 15 gallons at a time; all you have to do is to load it in the car, drive it up there, wait in line, prove your residency, and *viola* they will take it out of your vehicle for you - for free! It's definitely much easier than I thought it would be.
On the way in, at their Jacoby St. location, you will pass dozens of peacocks, hanging out alongside their friends the pigs - these are the current full-time residents at the dump! It actually makes refuse collecting sound interesting, and this is all information that is helpful to know.
