Curbside Christmas tree recycling in Marin County 2014:

 

With over 250,000 residents in Marin County, it is a good thing there are so many easy ways to recycle Christmas trees at the curbthuskeeping them from going into landfill and then turning the trees into mulch. When I was a child we used to cut all the branches off the tree and toss each one into the fire with a well wish, resolution or prayer for someone or something good to happen in the New Year. Well, now we are green savvy. We have "spare the air" days and a well-organized county wide curbside recycling program to divert waste from our landfills.

Each garbage pick-up department has their own guidelines as to what, where, when and how to dispose of your Christmas tree... so take a look below. Also, take a moment to follow the links to your garbage collection department for tips on all types of recycling and composting.

Marin Sanitary Service:

Place trees at curb next to green can (not inside). Cut trees to 6 feet or less. No flocked trees, tree stands or ornaments. Collection on your service day for the month of January; one tree per house or drop off for free at the Marin Resource Recovery Center-565 Jacoby Street in San Rafael

Serving: Larkspur, Greenbrae, Kentfield, Las Gallinas Valley, Ross, San Anselmo, San Rafael, Fairfax, and Ross Valley (Sleepy Hollow and Oak Manor).

Novato Disposal:

Place trees at curb the night before service day; pick up the week of January 6-10.  No flocked trees, tree stands or ornaments.  Additional trees may be cut up and placed inside green can.

Serving:  Novato.

Mill Valley Refuse

Place trees at curb the week after New Years on green can collection day.  Cut trees to 5 foot lengths. Flocked trees are OK. Trees put out by garbage cans will not be picked up.

Serving:  Mill Valley neighborhoods-Almonte, Alto, Belvedere, Corte Madera, Mill Valley, Homestead Valley, Strawberry, and Tiburon.

Tamalpais CSD

Place cut up trees in green can (no longer than two feet in length and two feet wide). Or  place your tree curbside the week of January 6. After January 13, there will be a $15 fee for tree pickup.

Sausalito/Marin City  Place trees in green cans on regular green pickup day. No flocked trees, tree stands or ornaments. A debris box will be available on the MLK grounds for drop-off until mid-January.

Serving: Bay Cities Refuse customers in Sausalito and Marin.

West Marin

Place cut up trees in green cans on green waste pick up days.  No flocked trees, tree stands or ornaments.

Serving: Bolinas, Forest Knolls, Inverness, Marshall, Muir Beach, Nicasio, Olema, Point Reyes Station, San Geronimo, Stinson Beach, West Marin and Woodacre.
