Celebrating San Rafael’s Best Biscuits & Buns

Health food entrepreneurs are on the rise, especially here in Marin. From the woman at the farmers market selling home-pickled vegetables to the ever-growing local honey businesses all over the county, our obsession with good food has had entrepreneurs working hard to make a name for themselves in this competitive food industry, and boy, do I love them for it! Every new culinary creation is another chance for us to explore and taste something new (and maybe even eat a little bit healthier). 

When we heard that our neighbors at the Terra Linda office had started their own bakery called Biscuits & Buns - I was elated. I couldn't wait to try them out...and they were amazing!  

As a health-minded individual, I'm always on the lookout for delicious and nutritious food options. When I heard about our neighbors' amazing vegan buns, I just had to check them out! Not only are they vegan, but they're also made with all-natural ingredients and are totally delicious. All of their biscuits and buns are vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, artificial color-free, soy-free, local AND organic. They never use eggs, dairy, beans, coconuts, or seeds.  

Upon investigation, I learned that for owner, Lisa Block, the reason behind such a specific niche bakery was being able to enjoy home-baked delights after a series of debilitating health complications forced her to abandon standard baked fare. Certain ingredients commonly used were not part of her diet, and as she came to learn, she was by no means alone. Many people face the same dietary restrictions as Lisa, and she’s become a standard-bearer for successful alternatives that don’t smell or taste like alternatives. 

After a few years of tinkering with recipes, Lisa perfected a special blend of flour that could be used successfully in her signature recipes. She assiduously tested the recipes on her non-gluten-free friends until she was eventually satisfied and then went even farther. She found her magic ingredients that were all local, organic, and sustainable! All her recipes stick to the fundamental criteria for these specific dietary needs. 

I don’t know how she does it, but these biscuits are some of the best I've ever had the pleasure of eating - vegan or not! My current favorites are the cinnamon sugar bun, raspberry with glaze, and rosemary salt biscuit. There’s really nothing better than feeling like you’re having a decadent treat but knowing you’re actually eating clean AND supporting a local business! That’s what I call a win-win-win. 

We are so blessed to have such amazing and talented neighbors. I'm so impressed with how they've turned their passion into a business, and I know their delicious buns will bring smiles to all who try them. Thank you, neighbors, for being so amazing!
