How clever was I?I had
this great idea to use a series of fences to allow the deer onto our property
to clean up fruit fall, and lock them out when their services were not
required.We would live happily
together.Ha!Having purchased nearly an acre, with visions
of a petite urban farm, my ignorance was only superseded by my naiveté.The deer, it seems, were
here first and possess a solid determination to continue to both breed and
graze on my little slice of earth.
When it comes to deer and gardens, I have
learned, war is not too strong of language. Many of you who have gone to great lengths to nurture tender tendrils of
sweet peas, or finally...
When one of
our dear friends proudly displayed his new, permanently manicured lawn to us
some years back, my intuition immediately kicked in saying, this doesn’t feel
right…Here was a yard where two dogs
handled their daily duties, and a slew of kids played regularly.I wondered, how does it get clean? He explained to us that he sprays it down
(waters it…?) to clean off the poop. But
no mowing required, and far less water required to keep it clean than to grow

Marin Landscape Design Ideas
As I am sitting here writing this blog, the contractors are
jack hammering my concrete patio in the backyard - so it's a little hard to
concentrate at the moment, but perfect time to write about my current dilemma.
What to do with the backyard?
The backyard is HUGE and it has so much potential. There is enough space for a pool, lawn, deck and
even a bocce ball court. Backyards are
a huge part of California year round living and the way I end up designing this
backyard can make or break my budget. So
I am going to have to consider a few things. How will we be using the
yard? How much maintenance do we want? And what is our budget?
To get started, I am going to start gathering some ideas
Robert Burle Marx holds a special place in the development of modernism in the field of landscape architecture. Often times in books - and in my professor's history courses - he was set apart from others of the same period. In Elizabeth Rogers' book, Landscape Design, she gives him his own sub-chapter: Roberto Burle Marx and the Garden as Abstract Art.
"Roberto Burle Marx in Brazil combined the International Style and native Brazilian plants and culture for a new aesthetic. "
That sums it up nicely - a new aesthetic. He was - and still is - so unique, that he stands out as a iconic master in the profession. His works are iconic also, especially the famed Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
