Berkeley Real Estate Market

As an East Bay city with a population of well over 100,000 people, the Berkeley real estate market features an extensive range of options and opportunities that you’d expect to find in just about any medium-sized city in Northern California. Vintage homes and condos for sale in the Berkeley area are plentiful, but new development has also been on the upswing around town in recent years as well, providing more newly built residences to anyone who prefers a more modern or updated living space.

Some of the most coveted real estate in the East Bay can be found to the north of the university, in the Berkeley Hills. Unique single-family homes, designed by some of the most influential 20th century architects in the Bay Area, line the winding, tree-lined streets of the Berkeley Hills. Contemporary and mid-century modern homes designed by the likes of Richard C. Peters, Joseph Esherick, and Harwell Hamilton Harris mingle with earlier homes by John Hudson and Bernard Maybeck to give this area an exclusive, very East Bay character.

Real estate in Berkeley is interesting and varied. From grand homes built in the early 1900s to contemporary mid-century gems tucked up in the Berkeley Hills, and affordable condominiums near the UC campus, Berkeley real estate offers homes for every sensibility and many pocketbooks. In Central and South Berkeley, shingled bungalows and stately Victorians share real estate with inexpensive apartments and university residential halls.

Berkeley Community Amenities

The neighborhoods of Central and South Berkeley are full of college town ambiance and sensibilities. It is here that all the trappings of a college town can be found in cafés and bookstores, residential streets, and student housing.

The University of California at Berkeley is easily the most recognizable attraction in town, but the list of things to see and do once calling this part of East Bay home reaches far. The McLaughlin Eastshore State Park and Seashore features a terrific network of tidal marshes, beaches, and trails, the Ohlone Doggy Park near Downtown Berkeley is one of the top places to let any four-legged members of your family run around and burn off some of that pent up energy. And speaking of Downtown Berkeley, you’ll also find plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment all along some of the city’s primary thoroughfares, which mainly include University Avenue and Shattuck Avenue.
